Do you work in a geographically dispersed design organization? Is part of your team composed of external contractors? Are you separated by more than just time zones and telephones? How do language, culture, and technology affect our ability to collaborate?

User Experience Managers Itamar Medeiros and Richard Howard (Autodesk) will use examples from their own experience to lead a group discussion of the problems and opportunities in the current interaction design processes and methodologies, and contrasting it with current research findings in the field of collaborative/distributed design.

Biography

ITAMAR MEDEIROS
Itamar Medeiros, from Brazil, currently lives in Shanghai (China), where he works as User Experience Manager for the Geospatial Platform and Server applications of the Infrastructure Modeling product line of the Architecture, Engineering & Construction Industry Group at Autodesk®, and helps promote Interaction Design as a local coordinator for the Interaction Design Association (IxDA). As an Information Design specialist, served as board member of the Brazilian Society of Information Design, lead the Design Research team of the Hypermedia Lab at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, and held a lecturing position as Assistant Program Director of the Visual Communication Department of the Raffles Design Institute at DongHua University, China. Recently, he has been awarded with an MA (distinction) in Design Practice at Northumbria University (Newcastle, UK) for his thesis “Designing the User Experience: Creating Innovative Design Software Solutions within Collaborative/Distributed Design Environments”.

RICHARD HOWARD
Richard is the Design Manager for Geospatial products at Autodesk. Focusing on Geospatial technology for the past 12 years at the company, he has worked with Autodesk applications for over 22 years. Richard’s background and training are in environmental design and software engineering. Prior to joining Autodesk he worked as an intern architect at several prestigious architecture and land planning firms, built a successful business unit at a top 25 VAR, and was a senior software developer for both Archsoft Group (ASG) and then Softdesk. A member of the Autodesk Product Design Core Team, Richard is involved in cross company design initiatives and was instrumental in the adoption of User Centered Design and Usability practices within the company. He has been awarded multiple patents for his software innovations, and is a published author.
