Stacked UIs

Session Title

Stacked UIs

Presenter

Rob Nero

Session Type: Discussion

A “stacked UI” is a way to label multiple interfaces that occupy the same physical space, but are still independently useable. This term surfaced while designing a new input device for portable computers; a project for the IxD Masters program at Malmö University in Sweden. My design proposal was to combine a keyboard with a trackpad, stacking one interface on top of the other. Each interface would remain intact and fully functional by the use of the hardware and software configuration.

During this session I propose to present the research I am collecting regarding “stacked UIs” in preparation for my Master’s thesis. I would also want to discuss the idea of stacking user interfaces, examples of stacked UIs, and the potential applications of stacking UIs. I would also be able to demonstrate my final project, named TRKBRD (trackboard), which allows a person to type on a keyboard normally and also glide their fingers on top of the keys to move the cursor.

Biography

My name is Rob Nero and I’m originally from Milwaukee, WI. I received a Bachelors degree in Management Information Systems in the same city, with an emphasis on usability. After designing software for 10 years, I began the Interaction Design Masters program at Malmö University in Sweden, to venture into the hardware side of design. I am currently working on my Master’s thesis on physical interfaces and “stacked UIs”.
