Session Title

The Role of Interaction Design in Organizational Design

Presenter

Jamin Hegeman, Nokia and Jared Cole, Adaptive Path

Session Type: Discussion

While much of interaction design today is focused on creating great experiences for the products and services people use, we believe the organizations that provide the means for the creation of these experiences could benefit from interaction design. In this discussion, we’ll share a high level view of interaction design and its potential role in organizational design, a perspective influenced by our experience at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Design. We’ll explore the places of interaction design within organizations, share strategies for transforming design firms from traditional design work to these new places, examine the role of consultancies versus in-house design teams, and collaborate with participants to explore the places and strategies of interaction design the context of the organizations that govern human behavior and interaction.

Biography

Jared Cole is an interaction designer at Adaptive Path. He firmly believes that design is a fundamental human instinct and that learning and practicing design gets you a glimpse into what makes human beings tick. Jared’s particular focus is on culture, behavior, and experience.

Jared began his work experience as an interface designer at The Screen House, where he explored communication theory, visual design, and information architecture. He later joined Simmons College as a senior designer working on their website and dynamic publishing applications. Later, while attending Carnegie Mellon University, Jared worked as a design researcher, investigating the independence of individuals diagnosed with congestive heart disease.

In 1994, Jared founded CoffeeKids, a design shop focused on helping small non-profits with their design challenges. Jared is always looking for ways for design to help solve complex social problems, and CoffeeKids allows Jared the chance to offer his design expertise to non-profits.

Jared graduated with a Masters in Design, emphasis on Interaction Design from Carnegie Mellon University, School of Design. He also earned a Bachelors in Design with Honors, emphasis in Visual Communication from Nova Scotia College of Art & Design.

Jamin Hegeman is a senior designer at Nokia Design in San Francisco, where he works across the Nokia organization to define new services and business opportunities from a design perspective. He has a masters in design with a focus on interaction design from Carnegie Mellon University, where he also taught a course on interaction design. His interests include interaction design, service design, organizational design, design strategy, social services, healthcare, behavioral change, identity construction, emotion, and the design of culture.

During his 13 years of experience, Jamin has worked as a journalist at United Press International, editor at EEI Communications, web developer at the University of Pittsburgh, and designer at Adaptive Path. In 2005, he also started Yum Yum Web, a web design and consulting company. Jamin is a member of the Service Design Network and has been on the planning board for the network’s 2008 and 2009 conferences. He also directed CMU’s Emergence service design conference in 2007.

Jamin has a passion for design and its ability to transform the world from what exists to what people aspire it to be, and believes interaction design can be applied much more broadly than it is today.

Sound like a nice presentation that can potentially broaden the community’s understanding of ID. Will you draw from your own experiences working at your respective organizations or present case studies based on other researchers’ work?
